Voluntary Guidelines for the Design and Effective Implementation of Ecosystem-Based Approaches to Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction and Supplementary Information

Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity

April 2019

This report builds on progressive work on ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) and eco-disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR), including a synthesis report on experiences with ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

These guidelines offer:

1. The rationale for integrating ecosystem-based approaches into policy frameworks for adaptation;

2. Principles and social and environmental safeguards to anchor implementation;

3. Practical steps for planners and practitioners to design and implement effective EbA and Eco-DRR; and

4. Guidance on how to reach out to key sectors such as planning, finance, agriculture, infrastructure, water, and forestry.
